The defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders were back in CPL action as they took on the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots, with the mission of kick-starting their title defence with a victory. With Akeal Hosein stepping in as stand-in captain, the TKR took the field with purpose, determined to open their CPL 2026 campaign on a winning note. Backed by their passionate supporters, TKR looked every bit the champions they are, delivering a composed and commanding performance from the very start.

Bowling first, TKR commenced proceedings in dominant fashion, immediately putting SKNP under immense pressure. Sunil Narine set the tone with a sensational opening spell, striking twice in his very first over and giving the Knight Riders early control of the innings. The pressure continued to build as TKR’s bowlers attacked with discipline and never allowed the Patriots to settle. Stand-in skipper Akeal Hosein led from the front, making crucial breakthroughs and demonstrating his composure in a leadership role, while Terrance Hinds produced an excellent spell of 3/33 to keep the pressure firmly on. Narine was simply outstanding, finishing with magnificent figures of 3/7 from his 4 overs, while Dominic Drakes chipped in with a couple of wickets.. It was a complete bowling effort from TKR as they restricted SKNP to just 109/9, setting up an ideal platform for the chase.

The run chase saw TKR briefly tested as they lost a couple of early wickets, but the defending champions responded with the calm and character that has become synonymous with the Knight Riders. Making his first appearance for TKR, Matthew Breetzke stepped up brilliantly, absorbing the early pressure and steadily taking control of the chase. His composed 35 off 35 balls, alongside Joshua Da Silva’s 18, ensured TKR remained firmly on course. With the target revised to 94 under the DLS Method, Breetzke helped steer the Knight Riders home within 15 overs, sealing a convincing 19-run victory. It was an impressive all-round performance from TKR, clinical with the ball, composed with the bat and, most importantly, a winning start to their title defence. TKR will now look to carry this momentum forward and continue their march towards another CPL crown.
